Dr. Phillip Kapraun - Pioneering Veterinarian and Equine Researcher

Phillip Kapraun, DVM, is an Illinois veterinary practitioner who has led the Harvard Equine Practice since 1984. A thought leader in his field, he has developed evidence-based approaches to treating lameness in Quarter Horses and Standardbred racehorses. A graduate of the undergraduate program at the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Phillip Kapraun attained membership in Omega Tau Sigma, the professional veterinary fraternity, and pursued his doctor of veterinary medicine at the University of Illinois.

Dr. Kapraun gained early experience on the staff of the Harvard Veterinary Clinic, treating small animals, exotic pets, and a variety of livestock, including various cattle breeds. Accepting a full partnership role with the practice in 1979, he narrowed his focus to the health concerns of Standardbred racehorses.

Closely connected to his alma mater, Dr. Kapraun has collaborated with college researchers on equine conditions, including osteochondrosis. In one project in collaboration with Dr. Kevin Kline, he examined how osteochondrosis affects the racing performance of three-year-old Standardbred racehorses. In another study, he and his co-researcher delved into equine sires and gender and how this affects the risk of developing bony lesions such as osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) and osteochondrosis.
